RIL deploys wireless POS terminal

June 10, 2003 22:18 IST

Reliance Infocomm Ltd has deployed its first wireless Point of Sale terminal in Mumbai for processing credit card transactions.

The pilot project, with HDFC Bank as the acquiring bank, was commissioned at the Reliance Webworld outlet at central Mumbai, Reliance Infocomm said in a release in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The wireless POS at central Mumbai is now being used for processing transactions against purchase of Reliance IndiaMobile connections, it said.

Reliance, which claimed this to be the first Internet Protocol based wireless POS terminal in the country, said more wireless POS would be activated at other Reliance Webworlds in the next few weeks' time.

The pilot stage would be completed in the next four to six weeks, after which wireless POS will be ready for commercial launch, it said.

A POS terminal is the equipment used by the merchants to process credit card payments at the sales outlets, which is connected to a bank's data centre over a dedicated phone connection.

With the introduction of wireless POS, a transaction is processed directly at the bank's data centre, bypassing the physical infrastructure, it said.
