With the new government remaining committed to restructure airports, the Canadian companies are eyeing projects worth over Rs 5400 crore (Rs 54 billion) to make world-class airports in the country.

Nine Canadian enterprises took part in a seminar titled 'Opportunities for Indian-Canadian partnership on airports,' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, aimed at developing ties between the two countries in building airport infrastructure.

"We are encouraged by the reforms in the civil aviation sector in India and we are ready to offer our expertise to further improve the airports in this country," Peter Nesbitt of Export Development, Canada, said in New Delhi.

Alex Papadakis of Canadian Commercial Corporation said: "Our firms have the necessary skills and experience in carrying out infrastructural projects. We would like to offer this expertise for upgradation of airports in India."

In his key-note address, Airport Authority of India Chairman K Ramalingam said, "We are determined to a fillip to private investment in the civil aviation sector."

He said there was a proposal for creation of 18 new terminals besides upgradation of 25 airports throughout the country.

Earlier in the day, new Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said that his government would ensure speedy restructuring of airports in the country with a special emphasis on those handling international traffic.
