Housing finance documents for NRIs

Larissa Fernand

A non-resident Indian (NRI) hunting for a housing loan needs to produce two sets of documents. The first set will comprise of property-related documents. The housing finance company will provide you with the entire list of documents. The documents would vary depending on whether you are buying a ready apartment, booking an apartment in a building under construction or land which has to be developed.

The other documents relate to your employment and residency to prove the NRI status. These documents, mentioned below, will be common to any finance company sanctioning the loan.

  • Photocopies of the employment contract. If the document is not in English then you would need to attach an attested English translation either by the relevant embassy or the employer.
  • Salary slip (latest or the past few months).
  • Copy of the latest work permit or employment contract.
  • Copy of the identity card issued by employers.
  • Copy of the visa.
  • Letter from the bank stating the account number, the type of account and the balance in the account.
  • Continuous Discharge Certificate for merchant navy employees.
