Sensex down 205 points; Jaiprakash sheds 5%

The index opened 69 lower at 17,366. The index moved in a range of 231 points between 17,136 (low) and 17,367 (high).

The index finally ended with loss of 205 points at 17,230.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,789 stocks traded, 1,431 advanced, 1292 declined and 66 were unchanged on Tuesday.

The NSE Nifty settled with a loss of 53 points at 5,105 points.

THE SHAKERS...

Jaiprakash Associates [Get Quote] plunged over 5% to Rs 256. Reliance [Get Quote] Infrastructure tumbled 4.5% at Rs 1,394.

BHEL slipped 3.3% at Rs 1,736, while SBI [Get Quote] declined 2.8% at Rs 1,655.

Bharti Airtel [Get Quote] and NTPC dropped 2.6% each to Rs 828 and Rs 186, respectively.

HDFC Bank [Get Quote] declined 2.5% at Rs 1,464.

TCS [Get Quote], Hindalco [Get Quote], Cipla and Wipro [Get Quote] were down over 2% each to Rs 952, Rs 199, Rs 208 and Rs 496, respectively.

DLF and Ambuja Cements declined around 2% each to Rs 636 and Rs 109, respectively.

ONGC [Get Quote], Mahindra & Mahindra, ICICI Bank [Get Quote] and Reliance were the other major losers on Tuesday.

...AND THE MOVERS

Satyam [Get Quote] and Tata Motors [Get Quote] gained 1.3% each at Rs 495 and Rs 678, respectively.

Infosys [Get Quote] was up 1% at Rs 1,887.

Tata Steel [Get Quote], ACC and HDFC were up marginally.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Cairn India [Get Quote] led the value chart with a turnover of Rs 290.82 crore followed by Mudra Port (Rs 263.59 crore), HDFC (Rs 256.23 crore), Aishwarya Telecom (Rs 171.34 crore) and Suzlon Energy [Get Quote] (Rs 168.38 crore).

Aishwarya Telecom topped the volume chart with trades of around 1.47 crore shares followed by ICFI (1.40 crore), Ispat (1.14 crore), Cairn India (91 lakh) and Nagarjuna Fertilisers (89 lakh).
