Railway earnings up at Rs 6,421 crore

Continuing its growth trend, the Railways earned Rs 6420.59 crore (Rs 64.20 billion) during April this year compared to Rs 5500.40 crore (Rs 55 billion) during the same period last year, registering an increase of 16.73 per cent.

The total goods earnings have gone up from Rs 3680.64 crore (Rs 36.80 billion) in April 2007 to Rs 4391.55 crore (Rs 43.91 billion) in April 2008, increasing by 19.31 per cent.

The earnings from passengers during April were Rs 1793.98 crore (Rs 17.93 billion)  compared to Rs 1616.69 crore (Rs 11.16 billion) during the same period last year, registering an increase of 10.97 per cent, an official release said.

The total number of passengers booked during April 2008 were 572.64 million compared to 538.42 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 6.36 per cent.
