Chennai was high on Microsoft's business expansion plans, Gates said during his visit to the city.
Jayalalithaa who was the Tamil Nadu chief minister at that time invited him to invest in a high performance computing centre and an engineering product design and delivery centre in Chennai.
Gates appreciated strength of the IT professionals in Chennai. In Chennai, Bill Gates also met Indian IT industry leaders, DMK president M Karunanidhi along with the then Union Communications and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran.
