Tatas to exit Bengal if protests continue

August 29, 2008

The fear that the Tatas may finally pull the plug on the Singur project was also echoed by a few workers of the plant when this correspondent visited Singur on Friday morning.

If the protest movement by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee rolls into next week, many Tata workers, hailing from other states, will start packing their bags.

"And that would probably drive the last nail into the coffin of the Tatas' Nano factory," said a worker at Nano's engine shop from Uttar Pradesh on condition of anonymity.

"Please don't take my photograph and please don't ask my name," he blurted and covered his face. "For you (read the media), it is just another spicy news to draw people's attention, for us, it's a matter of life and death. We have come here to earn our livelihood. Instead, we are getting beaten up, threatened and harassed. Do we deserve this?"

Asked if Trinamool Congress loyalists were threatening them, the middle-aged man glared and went out of sight by promptly crossing the barricaded entrance of the Nano factory.

Two of his colleagues, who had also ventured out, followed him to avoid our 'interrogation'.
