Sensex ends down 79 pts; TCS, Reliance drag

The Sensex opened 62 points lower at 14,595 amid subdued cues from the global markets. The index rebounded and moved up to a high of 14,726 before slipping back into the negative zone to a low of 14,504 - down 222 points from the day's high.

The index gyrated between zones for most part of the trading day today and finally ended with a loss of 79 points at 14,578.

The market breadth was extremely positive - out of 2,719 stocks traded, 1,845 advanced, and 806 declined today.

The NSE Nifty moved in a range of 73 points before settling with a loss of 18 points at 4,395.

INDEX MOVERS. . .

Grasim [Get Quote] surged over 3% to Rs 1,895. Ranbaxy [Get Quote] moved up 2.8% to Rs 524.

Jaiprakash Associates [Get Quote] gained 2.4% at Rs 175, and Maruti [Get Quote] rallied 2% to Rs 572.

Tata Steel [Get Quote] and ACC advanced 1.6% each to Rs 692 and Rs 586, respectively.

Satyam [Get Quote], Hindalco [Get Quote] and Infosys [Get Quote] were up around 1% each at Rs 396, Rs 142 and Rs 1,656, respectively.

. . . AND THE SHAKERS

TCS [Get Quote] dropped 2.7% to Rs 816. Reliance and BHEL shed almost 2.5% each at Rs 2,243 and Rs 1,714, respectively.

ONGC [Get Quote] slipped 1.5% to Rs 982. Sterlite, Larsen & Toubro and Mahindra & Mahindra declined 1.3% each to Rs 624, Rs 2,657 and Rs 517, respectively.

HDFC [Get Quote] and DLF were down over 1% each at Rs 2,373 and Rs 514, respectively.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance Natural Resources [Get Quote] topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 469 crore followed by Reliance Capital [Get Quote] (Rs 271.50 crore), Reliance (Rs 233 crore), Essar Oil [Get Quote] (Rs 220 crore) and Reliance Petroleum [Get Quote] (Rs 177.75 crore).

Reliance Natural Resources also led the volume chart with trades of around 4.50 crore shares followed by Ispat Industries [Get Quote] (2.86 crore), IFCI (1.95 crore), Bellary Steels (1.15 crore) and Kashyap Technologies (1.11 crore).
