Sensex ends above 17K, Nifty over 5K

The BSE benchmark index, the Sensex, ended the day up 229 points at 17,151. The NSE Nifty ended at 5009, up 68 points.

After opening with a positive gap of 139 points at 17,060, the barometer on Thursday gained 237.10 point at 17,158.49 in early morning trade.

REL rallied 9.63% to Rs 1,125. Tata Steel [Get Quote] advanced 6.81% to Rs 802, while Infosys [Get Quote] was up 4.59% to Rs 1,908.

HDFC Bank [Get Quote], ONGC [Get Quote], Cipla, SBI [Get Quote], ACC, Satyam [Get Quote] and BHEL were the other major gainers.

Hindustan Unilever slipped nearly 3% to Rs 219.30.

Ambuja Cements and RCom were the other major losers. L&T and RIL [Get Quote]  also ended marginally down.

Metal and technology were the star performers on both BSE and NSE. The sentiment has been very positive and liquidity is abundant which has been taking the markets to new heights.

The NSE index, Nifty, on Thursday surged over the 5,000-points mark in early trade, on aggressive buying by foreign and domestic funds. It gained 75.05 points at 5015.55 in the first five minutes of trade and hovered around the 5000 mark throughout the day to finally end at 5000.55, up 60 points from Wednesday's close.

The Nifty took 52 days to move from 4,500-5000 level and 203 days to move from 4000-5000.

Support also came in from firming global markets.

Marketmen said firming US Dow Jones Industrial index and Nasdaq and Asian stocks boosted the trading sentiment.
