The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 61 points at 15,665. After touching a high of 15,726 in morning trades, the index slipped into red owing to weakness in technology stocks.
As selling spread to other counters, the index tumbled to a low of 15,467 - down 259 points from the day's high. Fresh buying helped the index cut the loss, and finally close with a loss of 99 points at 15,504.
The BSE IT index slipped 1.4% to 4387. The FMCG index was up nearly 1% at 2091.
The market breadth was almost neutral - Out of 2,812 stocks traded, 1,381 advanced, 1,365 declined and 66 were unchanged today.
INDEX SHAKERS...
TCS [Get Quote] shed 2.5% to Rs 997. Satyam [Get Quote] slipped 2% to Rs 422, and Infosys [Get Quote] dropped over 1% to Rs 1,806.
Reliance Communications [Get Quote] declined 2.3% to Rs 531, and Bharti Airtel [Get Quote] was down 2% at Rs 814.
NTPC and HDFC [Get Quote] dropped 1.5% each to Rs 183 and Rs 2,183, respectivelyt. ICICI Bank [Get Quote] declined 1.3% to Rs 895.
...AND THE MOVERS
Reliance Energy [Get Quote] surged nearly 3% to Rs 908. Maruti [Get Quote] moved up 1% to Rs 874.
VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS
GMR Infra topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 136.50 crore followed by Iwind Energy (Rs 125 crore), Reliance Energy (Rs 121.80 crore), IFCI (Rs 115.30 crore) and United Spirits [Get Quote] (Rs 104.60 crore).
