General Motor India, a unit of GM Corp, is evaluating possibilities to set up a powertrain (engine manufacturing) unit in the country to cater to domestic and export market.
"We have not finalised the timing of the plant but are definately planning to bring powertrain to India. The details of the plant would be announced in the near future," GM India's newly appointed President and Managing Director Karl
Slym told reporters.
He also said the company would launch a new sports utility vehicle Captiva in India during the upcoming Auto Expo in January next year.
"The Captiva would be brought in India as a completely built unit. We will study the market with the product first before taking a call on whether to assemble the car here or not," Slym said.
GM's Captiva would be pitted against Honda Siel Car India's popular SUV CR-V and Maruti [Get Quote] Suzuki's Grand Vitara which are also sold as CBUs here.
GM India presently sources engines for its products from its other global plants. Apart from multi-utility vehicle Tavera, which is 97 per cent localised, the company's other products run on sourced engines. The company is in talks with more than one state governments to set up the proposed plant, but has not zeroed down on one particular location as yet.
