Following Tuesday's record-breaking run, the Sensex opened with a bang at 18,473 - up 193 points from the previous close.
Unabated buying in capital goods and technology stocks saw the index rally to a fresh all-time intra-day high of 18,704. The Sensex finally ended at a record 18,658 - up 378 points.
The BSE Capital Goods index soared over 4% to 16,631, and the IT index surged over 3% to 5049. The Metal index was up 2.5% at 14,444.
The market breadth was marginally negative - out of 2,806 stocks traded, 1,417 declined, 1,325 advanced and 64 were unchanged on Wednesday.
INDEX MOVERS...
Larsen & Toubro zoomed 6.6% to Rs 3,372. BHEL soared over 4% to Rs 2,331.
Infosys [Get Quote] and Hindalco [Get Quote] surged nearly 4% each to Rs 2,125 and Rs 170, respectively.
ACC and Reliance Energy [Get Quote] gained 3.5% each at Rs 1,218 and Rs 1,586, respectively.
Bharti Airtel [Get Quote] and Satyam [Get Quote] rallied 3% each to Rs 1,072 and Rs 484, respectively.
Wipro [Get Quote] and Cipla advanced 2.8% each to Rs 503 and Rs 193, respectively.
Reliance Communications [Get Quote], TCS [Get Quote], ONGC [Get Quote] and Mahindra & Mahindra moved up around 2.5% each to Rs 724, Rs 1,125 and Rs 1,009 and Rs 756, respectively.
ICICI Bank [Get Quote] and Ambuja Cements were up over 2% each at Rs 1,068 and Rs 151, respectively.
SBI [Get Quote] and Tata Motors [Get Quote] added 1.8% each to Rs 1,924 and Rs 806, respectively.
...AND THE SHAKERS
Dr.Reddy's slipped 1.5% to Rs 633. Bajaj Auto [Get Quote] was the other loser at Rs 2,621.
MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS
Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 433.50 crore followed by Reliance Petro (Rs 417 crore), Reliance Energy (Rs 387 crore), Reliance Communications (Rs 353 crore) and Reliance Natural Resources [Get Quote] (Rs 244 crore).
