Sensex ends down 189 points, Reliance drops 2%

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 189 points at 19,317 on the back of the recovery in the US markets. The index, however, could not hold gains due to profit-taking at higher levels.

The index, thereafter, moved in a narrow range of 50 odd points for the major part of the session. Fresh selling towards the end saw the index slip to a low of 18,884 - down 433 points from the day's high. The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 189 points at 18,939. The NSE Nifty ended at 5,618, down 80 points.

The market breadth turned negative towards the close - out of 2,873 stocks traded, 1,496 declined, 1,307 advanced and 70 were unchanged today.

INDEX SHAKERS...

Hindalco [Get Quote] plunged 3.7% to Rs 184. ACC and Tata Steel [Get Quote] shed 3.3% each to Rs 1,075 and Rs 819, respectively.

Reliance Energy [Get Quote] tumbled 3% to Rs 1,704.

Reliance, DLF and TCS [Get Quote] dropped 2% each to Rs 2,786, Rs 880 and Rs 976, respectively.

NTPC, Wipro [Get Quote] and ONGC [Get Quote] shed nearly 2% each at Rs 231, Rs 449 and Rs 1,151, respectively.

HDFC Bank [Get Quote] slipped 1.5% to Rs 1,608.

...AND MOVERS

Maruti [Get Quote] rallied over 3% to Rs 967, and Bajaj Auto [Get Quote] gained 2.8% to Rs 2,728.

BHEL gained 2% at Rs 2,725. Ambuja Cements was up 1% at Rs 151.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

HDFC topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 324 crore followed by Reliance Natural Resources [Get Quote] (Rs 303 crore), HDFC (Rs 292 crore), Reliance Petroleum [Get Quote] (Rs 285 crore) and GMR Infrastructure [Get Quote] (Rs 221.30 crore).
