Sensex zooms 112 points to close at 14,516

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 28 points at 14,432. Some profit-taking in the early trades saw the index slip into the negative zone to touch a low of 14,372.

The index, however, soon rebounded and rallied to higher levels as the day progressed. The index touched a new all-time intra-day high of 14,527 - up 123 points - before settling with a smart gain of 112 points at 14,516.

While the BSE Auto index rallied 2% to 5713, the Metal index dropped 1% to 9346.

Out of 2,723 stocks traded, 1,533 advanced, 1,137 declined and the rest were unchanged today.

Index movers & shakers

Reliance Communications soared 5% to Rs 515. HDFC rallied over 4% to Rs 1,817, and Reliance Energy added 2.7% to Rs 549.

Maruti and Hero Honda surged 2% each to Rs 963 and Rs 730, respectively. Bajaj Auto moved up 1.7% to Rs 2,825.

Tata Steel advanced 1.5% to Rs 470. Bharti Airtel and SBI gained 1.3% each at Rs 781 and Rs 1,197, respectively.

Hindalco shed 2.7% to Rs 178. Wipro slipped 1.3% to Rs 635.

Value & volume toppers

Shree Ashtavinayak topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 314.80  crore followed by Auto Industries (Rs 227.60 crore), Reliance Communications (Rs 169 crore), Indiabulls (Rs 169 crore) and XL Telecom (Rs 151 crore).

IFCI led the volume chart with trades of around 49 lakh shares followed by Himachal Futuristic (15.30 lakh), Reliance Natural Resources (12.60 lakh), Silverline (90.25 lakh) and Shree Ashtavinayak (89.85 lakh).
