The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 176 points at 15,169, and zoomed to a high of 15,201 in opening trades on the back of firm global cues. The index, however, pared gains soon and dropped to a low of 15,054.
The index, thereafter, exhibited range-bound movements throughout the trading day. The Sensex finally settled with a gain of 129 points at 15,122. The NSE Nifty ended at 4,389, up 30 points.
The BSE Bankex and Auto index gained over 1% each at 7752 and 4777, respectively. The IT index advanced 1% to 4552. The Realty index, however, slipped over 1% to 7116.
The market breadth was fairly positive -- out of 2,699 stocks traded, 1,566 advanced, 1,060 declined and 73 were unchanged on Thursday.

Mahindra & Mahindra rallied 3% to Rs 675, and Reliance Communications [Get Quote] surged 2.8% to Rs 534.HDFC Bank [Get Quote], Bajaj Auto [Get Quote] and ACC gained around 2% each to Rs 1,182, Rs 2,365 and Rs 1,061, respectively.ICICI Bank [Get Quote] advanced 1.8% to Rs 872, and Ranbaxy [Get Quote] added 1.5% at Rs 378.HDFC, Infosys [Get Quote] and Wipro [Get Quote] moved up over 1% each to Rs 1,986, Rs 1,858 and Rs 476, respectively. Hindalco [Get Quote], ITC, Tata Motors [Get Quote], Dr.Reddy's, Reliance and TCS [Get Quote] were up around 1% each at Rs 158, Rs 171, Rs 682, Rs 637, Rs 1,907 and Rs 1,041, respectively....And The Shakers
Cipla plunged 2.7% to Rs 165. Reliance Energy [Get Quote] dropped 2% to Rs 767.
Value and Volume Toppers
Axis Bank topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 504.65 crore followed by debutant Puravankara (Rs 264.40 crore), HDIL (Rs 258 crore), GMR Infra (Rs 192.60 crore) and Reliance (Rs 171.50 crore).
Bellary Steel led the volume chart with trades of around 4.36 crore shares followed by Ispat Industries [Get Quote] (1.61 crore), Tata Teleservices [Get Quote] (1.56 crore), Nagarjuna Fertilisers (1.30 crore) and JP Hydropower (1.07 crore).
