Finance Minister P Chidambaram has three concerns but says he is not worried about the state of the economy.
Maintaining that the economy was growing at nine per cent and could do even better, he said, "Somebody must be benefiting from this nine per cent growth. It cannot be that nobody is benefiting. If there is a boom in construction, then civil engineers, masons must be employed."
Did he have any major worries, he was asked in an interview to PTI.
"I have no worries but I have three concerns. The main concerns are that we should not flag in our resolve to maintain fiscal prudence and fiscal stability. That is fundamental. Because growth has taken place for the last three to four years because of our unwavering commitment to fiscal prudence and stability. We should not allow that to flag.
"Investment is key to growth. Every impediment to investment must be removed whether in public sector, private sector or domestic and foreign," he said.
Chidambaram said, "You can have regulations. But regulation should not become impediments to investment. It is investment which is driving growth. And if a country like India requires high growth we must always revisit whatever impediments are there whatever regulations are there to ensure that investment continues to grow."
Nothing should be done to impede investment, he said. "I am not saying anybody is impeding. There are impediments. We are slow in removing these impediments. We must quickly remove those impediments."
"The third concern is we are not paying enough attention to human resources. A large country like India has to depend on its own human resources. Skill shortages are emerging. At the higher end there are clearly shortages emerging.
"We must acquire and retain a competitive edge we must become a knowledge society. We must pay attention to the quality of human resources at the highest level of astro-physicist to the space scientist to the lowest level of a welder, a mason, a carpenter," he said.
In the end, asked whether he sleeps well, Chidambaram said, "Yes, I sleep well."
