Tata Teleservices Ltd has asked for more time from the government to sign the national long distance license, for which the Tata Group telecom company has already received the required letter of intent.

TTSL has given submission that it needs three more months to sign the national long distance license. The LoI was issued to them two months ago, official sources said.

Before signing the NLD license, a company has to get certifications that no dues are pending against it on account of licensing or otherwise from all divisions of the departmnent of telecommunication. It is also required to pay the entry fee and the bank guarantee.

In case of TTSL, DoT is still looking into the dues aspect, sources said.

"We expressed our willingness to sign this agreement at the earliest and requested DoT to revert to us on the dues that we had to pay on account of license fees if any.

"Since this response from DoT took longer than anticipated, we sought an extension of the LoI. This is still awaited," an official TTSL spokesperson said.

In 2005, the government reduced the entry fee for new NLD license to Rs 2.5 crore (Rs 25 million) and revenue share was cut to six per cent from 15 per cent earlier.

The other Tata Group company, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited, has both NLD and international long distance license.
