Minus tax, petrol would cost Rs 18/litre

Petrol will cost less than Rs 18 a litre but for the duties levied by central and state governments, Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar said on Tuesday.

Petrol price of Rs 40.49 a litre in Delhi is 57 per cent (Rs 23.09) made up of customs, excise duty and sales tax. Price of petrol without customs duty, excise duty and sales tax components would be Rs 17.40 per litre, he said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

Similarly, the Rs 28.45 a litre retail price of diesel comprises of Rs 10.03 (35 per cent) customs duty, excise duty and sales tax component.
