September 22, 2004 17:01 IST

The Group of Ministers, constituted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to tackle the Dabhol power project imbroglio, will hold its first meeting on October 1, Union Power Minister P M Sayeed said on Wednesday.

"The GoM, of which I am a part, will hold its first sitting on October one. I can't say what is going to be the shape of things on the (Dabhol) project now," Sayeed told reporters here after laying the foundation for the Centre for Research and Continuing Education of the Central Power Research Institute in Bangalore.

He said there were several cases related to the project pending in Indian and foreign courts and it would be inappropriate to comment on the issue. "All the issues about the project will be the subject matter of October 1 meet," Sayeed said.

He also said of the 41,000 mw of generation target set for the 10th five year plan, 8,500 MW had already been achieved, and construction had begun for 27,000 MW.

About 7,000 MW was the target for generation by Independent Power Producers, of which financial closure had been achieved for 4,000 MW with the remaining projects for 3,000 MW expected to be achieved by next month, he said.

Asked about initial public offers of National Hydro Power Corporation, Power Finance Corporation and Rural Electrification Corporation, Power Secretary R V Shahi said, "We are yet to receive any proposals from the firms; if it comes, we will examine."
