Market crash just a trailer: Naidu

May 17, 2004 18:41 IST

Bharatiya Janata Party President M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday described the mayhem in the stock market as a "trailer" of the coming political scenario.

"Terrible is the alternative. RJD Chief Laloo Yadav had declared that the government will be in place in five minutes. It is the fourth day today after the results are out. There is no common minimum programme, no common approach. Whatever statements Manmohan Singh is giving is being practically condemned by the Left," Naidu told reporters in New Delhi.

"Tomorrow terrorism (POTA) may be a casualty. This (market fall) is only a trailer of the coming scenario. It is the country's misfortune that this combination is coming to power," he said.

In an apparent reference to Samajwadi Party general secretary's "uninvited presence" at the dinner hosted by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, he said, "What is going to be the future. How things are happening. People are gatecrashing into dinners. There is no clarity with regard to the government."

Asked why the party did not bring in a legislation to bar people of foreign origin from occupying constitutional posts, he said, "We did not see such a possibility."

Naidu said while NCP had split from the Congress on the issue of foreign origin, SP had prevented the formation of a government under her leadership in 1998.
