General Motors India on Thursday said its car sales surged by 162.8 per cent in January 2003 to 1,477 units over 562 units in the same month last year.

Out of 1,477 units, GMI sold 700 units of premium mid-size car Chevrolet Optra while sales of entry-level mid-size car Opel Corsa stood at 750 units, GMI vice-president (corporate affairs) P Balendran told PTI.

The combined sales of luxury sedan Opel Vectra and sports utility vehicle Chevrolet Forester stood at 27 units.

The sales growth of largely led by higher demand for Opel Corsa, he said.

In January 2003, the company had sold 376 units of Corsa.

Compared with December 2003, sales dipped by 10.5 per cent in the month under review.

GMI, a wholly-owned subsidiary of US-based General Motors Corp, manufactures Opel range of cars at its plant at Halol (Gujarat) while imports and markets the luxury car Opel Vectra and sports-utility-vehicle Chevrolet Forester.
