December 22, 2004 19:31 IST

The Indian Oil Corporation's Sri Lanka unit made its debut on the Colombo Stock Exchange on Wednesday to mark a 75 per cent gain on the first day of trading.

The Lanka IOC share, which was more than 10 times oversubscribed at the Initial Public Offering earlier this month at Rs 27 for a Rs 10 share, hit the market at a whopping Rs 50.

A huge 18 million shares of the company traded at a high of Rs 54.00 and a low of Rs 45.25 giving investors a minimum return of 75 per cent overnight.

Lanka IOC offered 133 million shares of Rs 10 each at a premium ranging from Rs 13 to 17. Investors could bid at any price ranging from Rs 23 to 27 a share.

"The objective is to raise money for our expansion programme in Sri Lanka," a Lanka IOC spokesman said. "It has been a huge success."
