Mumbai has largest number of millionaires

Mumbai has the most number of millionaires in the country with as many as 18,939 individuals declaring income of over Rs 10 lakh to the Income Tax Department, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

Bangalore has the second highest number of millionaires at 13,130, followed by Delhi with 12,450 millionaires.

In all there are 70,217 millionaires throughout the country, Minister of State for Finance S S Palanimanickam said in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha.

"On the basis of returned income/loss, the number of individual assessees declaring income/loss of Rs 10 lakh or above as on September 30, 2003 were 70,127," he said.

Kolkata has 3,492 millionaires, Pune 4,198, Chennai 2,716, Hyderabad 3,835 and Ahmedabad 1,168. Besides, Allahabad has 76 millionaires, Amritsar 251, Baroda 665, Bareilly 46, Bhopal 146, Bhubaneshwar 694, Chandigarh 489, Cochin 411, Coimbatore 512, Dehradun 199, Guwahati 165, Indore 298, Jaipur 531, Jodhpur 187, Kanpur 498, Lucknow 217, Ludhiana 515, Madurai 40, Meerut 254, Nagpur 397, Nashik 225, Panchkula 431, Patna 230, Raipur 64, Rajkot 110, Ranchi 138, Shillong 50, Shimla 80, Surat 587, Thane 821, Trichy 192, Trivandrum 429 and Udaipur has 341 millionaires.
