Offshore operations in IT on rise: ESC

May 19, 2003 15:32 IST

The Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council said on Monday that the offshore operations in computer software and services are on the rise and the share for 2002-03 is estimated at 60 per cent.

"ESC estimates that aggregate export revenues in computer software and services, IT enabled services, software products and other related services sector will increase to Rs 46,500 crore (Rs 465 billion)," an ESC statement said in New Delhi.

With sustained increase in the share of offshore operations over the years, ESC said export revenues from offshore works had risen from 44 per cent in 2000-01 to 56 per cent in 2001-02.

"Now the share for 2002-03 is estimated at 60 per cent, which is likely to go up in the coming years. This would mean that given the emerging global IT landscape, business process outsourcing will be the mainstay of computer software and services exports in days to come," it said.

In the value terms, export revenues from offshore operations is estimated to go up to Rs 20,700 crore (Rs 207 billion) in 2002-03.

Export revenues from on-site operations are estimated at Rs 13,800 crore (Rs 138 billion) during the same period, lower by three per cent than in the previous year.

ESC expects the export realisation from offshore operations for 2003-04 to go up by 21 per cent. In value terms, the export revenue realisation for the year in reference would touch $5.14 billion as against $4.25 billion in 2002-03.

"However export revenues from on-site operations may decline by 2.5 per cent in 2003-04," it added.
