Rural banks to join May 21 strike
May 05, 2003 19:10 IST
About 196 Regional Rural Banks will participate in the nationwide strike called by central trade unions and federation of bank employees on May 21, in protest against the 'anti-labour' policies of government.
"Seventy thousand employees of 196 RRBs will observe one day strike on May 21," All India Regional Rural Bank Employees Association general secretary D K Mukherjee said in a statement on Monday.
The nationwide strike has been called by central trade unions and federation of bank employees, against 'anti-employee, anti-people' economic and labour policies of government.
The AIRRBEA said rural bank employees had held a demonstration before Reserve Bank, Nabard and sponsor banks on April 30 demanding formation of a national rural bank exclusively to cater to the rural and agriculture sector.
They also demanded a 'National Negotiation Forum' and linking manpower policy to business and promotion for all cadres.
"The working committee of AIRRBEA will meet in Kolkata on June 22 and decide on further agitation programmes, including strike, if the issues are not settled by that time," Mukherjee said.
