Trade actions, including imposition of anti-dumping duties, by several countries like the United States, Canada, South Africa, Thailand and those from the European Union, have considerably lowered the export of Indian steel to these countries, Lok Sabha was informed on Friday.

The levies imposed on Indian steel exports by these countries increased the delivered price to the destination markets and adversely affected the volumes, Minister of State for Commerce Rajiv Pratap Rudy said in reply to a question.

However, despite these adverse circumstances, the overall Indian steel exports recovered largely due to the ability of the exporters to find alternate markets and diversify the export basket by shifting to more value-added products, he said.

The government, Rudy said, had taken up the issues relating to the trade actions bilaterally as well as at the World Trade Organisation.
