Feb passenger car sales drop 22.7%

Indian passenger car sales fell by 22.7 per cent in February to 37,446 units, down from 48,444 units in the same month last year, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said on Wednesday.

SIAM said in a statement that car sales in April-February, the first 11 months of the current financial year, rose to 473,921 units from 450,289 in the same year-ago period.

Sales of commercial vehicles or trucks and buses combined totalled 19,527 units in February, up from 13,893 in 2002. Sales in April-February were 169,033 units against 126,577 in the same period last year.

Motorcycle sales in India, the world's second-biggest market, jumped 15.4 per cent to 308,994 units from 267,790 units in the year ago period, it added.
