GoM on labour reforms to meet on Wed

March 11, 2003 18:27 IST

The Group of Ministers on labour reforms, headed by Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission K C Pant, will meet on Wednesday to consider issues relating to enactment of a legislation on contract labour.

According to official sources, the proposed law will include major recommendations relating to increased responsibilities of contractors and measures for enhancing the benefits of contract workers.

These are likely to include insurance cover against personal accidents, illness, death and medical care as well as compensation packages in case of retrenchment, sources said.

The draft has been modified in view of recommendations made by the GoM and observations of the law ministry based on the meeting of group of secretaries.

The meeting will be attended by other members of the group including Small Scale Industry Minister C P Thakur, Telecom Minister Arun Shorie, Commerce Minister Arun Jaitley and Labour Minister Sahib Singh Verma.
