Tata Indicom to roll-out Wi-Fi service

June 26, 2003 20:34 IST

Tata Indicom, the umbrella brand of Tata group's telecom services, is all set to roll out its Wireless-Fidelity or Wi-Fi services in India, even as it has launched the service at five Mumbai-based Barista coffee outlets.

"We are positioning Wi-Fi as a premium service and will introduce it at around 150 to 200 locations in about 12 to 15 months," Tata Teleservices Maharashtra Ltd chief operating officer YVL Pandit told reporters in Mumbai on Thursday.

Tata Indicom expects to spend around Rs 10 crore (Rs 100 million) for the roll-out, which would be conducted on a phased manner, he said.

The Wi-Fi roll-out would be led by Tata Tele Services Ltd as the front-end operator, with Tata Infotech, acting as the system integrator, while Tata Net would provide VSAT services and VSNL the bandwidth, he added.

The group, which aims to provide 54 mbps connectivity, is targeting corporates, consumers and enterprises, Pandit said, adding TTML is in talks with Airports Authority of India to provide the services at certain select airports.

"We are also in talks with leading hotel chains in the country including the Taj Group, Hyatt and Meridien," he said, adding the price factor was yet to be worked out as it would depend on the customised business model.

"Fast, reliable, affordable, safe and convenient are the reasons of Wi-Fi gaining importance around the world", he said.

The company is also planning to launch Wi-Fi connectivity cards, but at a "later stage", Pandit said.

TTML would connect around 130 Barista coffee outlets in the country under its Phase-II plan, he added.

"The Phase-II is expected to be completed within six to 12 months time," Pandit said, adding the capital expenditure is being provided by the Tata group.

Wi-Fi is a term for high-frequency wireless Internet access through handheld devices or laptops, using a wireless connectivity card, which connect to port even as it is brought in to the hotspot area.

Hotspot is wireless broadband Internet access at public places including shopping malls, coffee shops, eating outlets among others.
