Infosys to invest in Bengal by the end 2003

Infosys will take a call on investing in West Bengal in the last quarter of this year, said S K Mitra, managing director Webel.

Addressing members of Calcutta Chamber of Commerce, Mitra said, N R Narayan Murthy, chief mentor of Infosys, has asked a team from Webel to meet him in the last quarter of 2003, when they will be in an expansion mode.

Mitra further said that Wipro has already started work in their plot and their scope of work would not be restricted to IT but would also be extended to ITES, with the acquisition of Spectramind by the company.P D Tulsyan, president CCC said, "Some experts do feel that labour unrest and lack of a high degree of applied computer literact may hinder the growth of information technology in the state." However, Mitra said that labour unrest that is most often associated with the state is a myth.

Citing a CMIE study, he said that in terms of man days lost West Bengal ranked 11th while the state topping the charts was Tamil Nadu.
