IBM to open development centre in Kolkata

West Bengal is likely to emerge as an important IT destination with IBM agreeing to start a 200-seat development centre in Kolkata and the state government initiating dialogue with host of companies to start IT ventures, state IT Minister has said.
"We have initiated a dialogue with 36 IT companies, out of which discussions with six companies are at an advanced stage," state IT Minister, Manabendra Mukherjee said in New Delhi.
Wipro has commenced construction of their facility, which will house software development and a call centre, he said, adding Samsung India has collaborated with WEBEL and Syntech to establish a PC integration facility in Kolkata.
He said the state was pursuing a number of e-governance initiatives and has launched a government-to-citizen portal, which will provide citizen-centric services.
He also said that GE Capital has informed the state government that Kolkata would be the leading city for their fifth centre in the country.
As against the view that West Bengal had a stagnant economy, the Central Statistics Organisation data reveals that it is one of the fastest growing states holding fifth position in terms of SDP growth in the last decade, Mukherjee added.
To realise the targets set by the IT vision 2010 for the state, a set of imperatives along with time-bound action plan has been evolved, he informed.
