Maharashtra sees 4,641 factory closures in 1999-2000

Industrial sickness in Maharashtra seems to be spreading evenly across different parts of the state.

The state saw 4,641 factory closures leaving 1,02,918 workers jobless during the financial year 1999-2000. There are a total of 34, 646 factories employing about 12.64 lakh (1.3 million) workers in the state.

Of the closed factories, Mumbai region (including Konkan) accounted for 1,579 closures, while Pune region saw 1,884. Both the regions dumped 35, 887 and 34, 233 workers, respectively.

In the case of other regions, Nashik saw 291 closures affecting 11, 155 workers, while Aurangabad and Nagpur (including Amravati) witnessed 211 and 676 closures, respectively, costing 10, 785 and 10, 858 jobs.

The state has 34,646 factories employing 12.64 lakh workers till 2000. Figures compiled after the fiscal 1999-2000 (till when the latest figures are available) show that there were 30, 005 factories running.
