Hutchison 3G to set up back office

Hemangi Balse in Mumbai

Hutchison 3G, the multi-media communications arm of the Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa group, is setting up a customer relations centre in Mumbai to service its 3G customers in the UK and Australia.

The centre will provide information, entertainment and multi-media messaging on the move. It will also give a chance to view the high-speed video on his mobile phone.

Hutchison 3G is launching third generation mobile multimedia communication services across UK, Italy, Hong Kong, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, Israel and Australia.

In fact, the company plans to commence third-generation project in Europe some time next week.

The state-of-the art service centre is expected to manage both, voice and data, and will also assist customers understand the 3G technology.

Even as the service centre is being set up here, India has still not opened up its market for 3G operators.

In Europe, Hutchison is considering 3G customers with fixed price tariffs for virtually unlimited wireless Internet access, video conferencing and conventional voice calls.

The mobile operator is also planning to offer the 3G handsets to its customers in Italy and UK by this year-end. The operator is conducting trials of its services in the two countries.

Hutchison, which will operate under brand "3", expects to cash on the Christmas festive mood in Europe.

Even as it is close to the run-up to its launch, the operator is still faced with several technical problems such as rectifying "dropped calls" when users move from a 3G to a 2G coverage area.

Hutchison Telecom, its Indian arm offering mobile services, operates in four circles -- Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Gujarat.
