Sinha says any rollback will destroy Budget's balance

Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha on Monday warned that any rollback of LPG and kerosene price hike will "destroy" the balance of the Budget.

"My task after the presentation of the Union Budget is to protect the integrity of the Budget. After all, the Budget is a holistic document. It has its own balance and a give away here and give away there will run the risk of destroying that balance in the Budget," Sinha told a post-Budget meeting hosted by Confederation of Indian Industry in New Delhi.

Sinha's observation assumes significance in the face of reports that keys allies of the National Democratic Alliance were pressurising the government to rollback some of the tough measures like LPG and kerosene price hike besides the five per cent surcharge on personal Income Tax.

"I wish, with your good wishes and support, I would be able to protect the integrity of the Budget," Sinha told the captains of industry.
