Jet Airways announces drastic cuts in air fare

In a major move that would lead to a fare war among domestic airlines, Jet Airways on Friday night announced a drastic reduction in fares by almost half in all major sectors on economy class travel, bringing them close to upper class railway travel.

Announcing the new initiative called "Everyone can fly," the premier private airline cut the fares on 37 sectors, including Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Kolkata, Delhi-Chennai, Delhi-Pune, Delhi-Hyderabad and Delhi-Bangalore.

Under the scheme, which will be effective from August 1 to October 31, a Delhi-Mumbai ticket would now cost only Rs 3,920 instead of Rs 6,095, a Delhi-Kolkata ticket Rs 2,860 in place of Rs 6,925 and a Delhi-Ahmedabad ticket Rs 2,462 compared with the current fare of Rs 4,780.

Following suit, Indian Airlines also introduced an advance purchase scheme on major domestic routes on economy travel, saying the fares under this scheme would 'substantially lower' that of the prevailing rates.

However, the IA spokesman did not give details of the rates but said the scheme, called APEX Fares, would be valid for the same August-October lean period.

Both IA and Jet said the passengers would be required to make bookings on a firm basis at least three weeks prior to travel.

The IA spokesman said their scheme would cover about 40 sectors, including the ones announced by its private rival Jet Airways.

The promotional fares announced by Jet under the 'Everyone Can Fly' scheme are Rs 2,462 for Delhi-Ahmedabad, Rs 2,443 for Delhi-Bagdogra, Rs 5,053 for Delhi-Bangalore, Rs 3,292 for Delhi-Chennai, Rs 4,110 for Delhi-Guwahati, Rs 3,478 for Delhi-Hyderabad, Rs 2,098 Delhi-Indore, Rs 2,443 Delhi-Jammu, Rs 2,860 Delhi-Kolkata, Rs 2,443 Delhi-Lucknow, Rs 3,246 Delhi-Pune, Rs 3,116 Delhi-Udaipur, Rs 2,558 Delhi-Vadodara, Rs 2,454 Chennai-Trivandrum, Rs 3,176 Chennai-Kolkata, Rs 2,024 Chennai-Coimbatore, Rs 2,402 Chennai-Cochin, Rs 2,443 Kolkata-Bagdogra and Rs 2,203 Kolkata-Guwahati.
