Enron issue came up during talks between Powell, Jaswant

The Enron issue came up during discussions between US Secretary of State Colin Powell and External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh during his last week's visit to New Delhi when Powell cautioned India that failure to resolve the matter could have serious deterrent effect on other foreign investors.

Briefing newsmen on the issue, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher also spoke of problems foreign companies faced by the American companies in India where they encountered "lack of respect for contracts".

Boucher gave an excerpt from the report that accompanying officials wrote after Powell's meeting with Singh because questions were raised as to how the US had taken up the Enron matter with the Indian government.

Undersecretary Larson (accompanying Powell) added that the US government was concerned by the numerous difficulties faced by Enron.
