Mahindras plans to export electric 'Bijlee'

Ten-seater powered vehicle 'Bijlee', manufactured by Mahindra Eco Mobiles Limited, will make inroads into South Asian and South East Asian markets soon.

'Bijlee', a three-wheeler vehicle, already introduced in Delhi, Pondicherry and Agra, would soon be plying on the roads of Bangalore, Hyderabad and Dehradun. Enquiries have been received from Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, MEML chairman Soami Saran told newspersonson Monday, adding that exports would be from next year.

MEML, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mahindra and Mahindra, plans to sell 500 units of the vehicle this year and touch the 3,000 mark in three years, he said.

He said the ten-seater electric transit van, besides being a zero emission vehicle, could play a pivotal role in reducing pollution levels in regions where it is operated. Virtually noiseless, it was equipped with state-of-the-art electronic controller to save energy.

Currently, the vehicle is being produced in a facility in Coimbatore and if the number rises, the production could be handled by the facilities of the parent company, Saran informed.

He said the company was also in the process of developing a four-wheeler model that could be used for commercial purposes for intra-city operations, besides hybrid vehicles that could use an alternate fuel.

The company was planning to release variants like ambulances, tourist and zoo/safari vehicles, he added.
