Simputer Trust scouting for financial support

BS ICE Bureau

The Simputer Trust, which holds the intellectual property regarding the hand-held device, is looking for financial partners to begin commercial production.

"We are looking for financial partners so that we can begin mass production of the product. We are convinced about the product, but it is for those with the money to see it as an opportunity," Vijay Chandru of PicoPita Simputers Private Ltd told reporters on Friday.

"We are likely to produce 100 units of the device in collaboration with BEL. But that is not enough. We are still looking for a partner who could give us the money to start commercial production of the Simputer," Chandru said, adding that if produced commercially, the device would cost about Rs 9,000 per unit.

The Simputer (the word comes from a marriage between 'simple' and 'computer') device is a hand-held computing device about the size of a palmtop, although much more powerful and was developed by a group of scientists who now form part of the trust which is trying to popularise it.

The Simputer, with 200 MHz, 32 MB DRAM incorporates the GNU/Linux operating system and in terms of utility, fits in somewhere between a palmtop and a laptop, he said. The device offers conversion of unicode text to speech, which enables it to read and speak in several languages.
