Shiv Sena 'testing' McDonald's French fries in labs

The Shiv Sena on Saturday said that it was carrying out laboratory tests of the French fries sold in India by McDonald's to determine whether they contained any beef tallow.

"The onus, however, is primarily on the US fast food chain to conclusively prove that the item (French fries) did not contain beef tallow as it has hurt feelings of Hindus," Subhash Desai, Shiv Sena spokesman, told reporters in Bombay.

The party would adopt a 'tough posture' on the issue if the doubts about the product proved correct, he said.

Desai also confirmed receipt of a letter from McDonald's to the Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, explaining facts in the case.

McDonald's shops in Bombay were damaged on Friday following reports that its french fries allegedly contained beef tallow with some VHP and Bajrang Dal activists also smearing cow-dung on Ronald McDonald, its mascot.

Desai said the issue was a very sensitive one and Shiv Sena would not 'compromise' on it.
