Industrialist Mohanlal Piramal dead

Leading industrialist Mohanlal Piramal, who was in coma after he attempted suicide a week back, died here on Wednesday.

The 69-year-old chairman of Piramal Spinning and Weaving Mills Limited was undergoing treatment at Breach Candy Hospital after he shot himself on April 26, hospital sources said.

He is survived by wife and three daughters.

Piramal was suspected to have attempted suicide following business losses, police said.

His servant and a close relative had heard gun shots from Piramal's room, police said adding a suicide note was found in his room which stated that he wanted to end his life. However, the reason behind the step was not mentioned.

Piramal had been chairman of the Mill Owners Association, Bombay, the Indian Cotton Mills Federation, Bombay Textile Research Association and the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council.

Piramal had done his doctorate in textiles and was closely associated with textile industry for the past 48 years.
