India may benefit from US review of economic sanctions

US Ambassador Richard F Celeste on Saturday, expressed hope that the Bush administration's decision to review the economic and trade sanctions imposed on several countries would yield positive results for India.

"The rethink on economic sanctions, whether they should be modified or ended is on. I hope it will yield positive results for India," Celeste told a conference of the Rotary Club in Delhi. US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, on Friday ordered a broad review of the sanctions imposed on various countries including India.

He said Indo-US relations "began and ended in shared values of commitment to freedom, devotion to democracy, respect for diversity and deep understanding that service is the cornerstone of national character."

The US envoy said the relationship had taken a "positive turn" in the past few years and the "enthusiasm to work close together" increased with the visit of former President Bill Clinton to India. "This relation will be strengthened by the Bush Administration and I don't see any backsliding".

"The new chapter in Indo-US relations will grow and flourish under the Bush Administration and the central ingredient will be our values and determination to pursue those values," he added.
