Opposition accepts govt offer on JPC probe into UTI scamTara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi Lok Sabha Speaker G M C Balayogi on Friday announced in the House that the Joint Parliamentary Committee chairman probing the stock market scam will also look into the allegations made by the opposition members regarding the UTI scam. Announcing this decision in the House, Balayogi said that he had summoned a meeting of opposition leaders on Friday to discuss how the UTI issue could be looked into. The opposition led by the Congress party on Friday accepted the government's offer of the JPC probing the securities scam, to investigate the UTI muddle. Balagyogi pointed out that the chairman of the JPC, Prakash Mani Tripathi would be looking into the UTI controversy, including all those aspects which had been discussed in Parliament. Earlier, the government sidestepped the relentless opposition demand for a separate JPC probe into the US-64 scam, but said the existing JPC probing the securities scam can look into the UTI controversy. This was pointed out by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan who contended during the zero hour that the terms of reference of the committee would also include the aspect relating to the protection of small investors. "The government just cannot relinquish the responsibility from taking the rap in the UTI scam. We will continue to agitate on the issue," said S Jaipal Reddy, Congress member of Lok Sabha.
