Politicians pay glowing tributes to Mehta

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Glowing tributes were paid Thursday to information technology wizard Dewang Mehta, who died under mysterious circumstances in a hotel room in Sydney.

Shocked on hearing that Mehta had died under mysterious circumstances, Congress chief spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said: "We would like to place on record our appreciation for the gigantic strides and extremely commendable work which Dewang Mehta did in the field of information technology for India."

"I would like to convey my party's heartfelt condolences to the bereaved members of Mr Mehta's family," Reddy said.

"It comes as a rude shock to our party and we hope that the mystery will be unravelled regarding how Dewang Mehta died. He was a young and brilliant person who excelled in the field of information technology. However, his premature death has robbed the country of an exceptional man who has done us proud," said senior BJP leader Jagdish Prasada Mathur.

CPM leader Sitaram Yechury expressed surprise at "Mehta's unfortunate death " and hoped that its circumstances would be probed by the authorities.

He pointed out that it was people like Dewang Mehta who had contributed towards India's growing stature as an information technology power. However, the international IT community would sorely miss the talent of the departed soul who had made such a great impression on them.

"Dewang Mehta appeared to be such a healthy person and his death under mysterious circumstances in Sydney on Thursday ought to be properly looked into," said Samata Party leader Raghunath Jha.

He pointed out that "it is because of his exceptional talent in the IT sector that he was made the chief of Nasscom" and also given a ponderous responsibility by the prime minister of drafting a national informatics policy.
