Versaware Tech launches BBC Worldwide's first e-book

Versaware Technologies India Pvt Ltd has partnered with BBC Worldwide in creating and launching its first electronic publication.

The e-book, titled On the Edge and authored by Rupert Smith, presents the intimate confessions of Jake and Luce, two of the leading characters in the current BBC Two drama, Attachments. The speed of accessing the e-book will enable fans of the series to read the work ten days before it is published in paperback format in the UK.

The On the Edge Web site and the e-book has been created by the digital services and e-book provider, Versaware Technologies, which has its production and development facility at Pune, India.

The e-book is available in Glassbook, Versabook and Mobipocket formats, for download to a PC, laptop and Palm PDA (personal digital assistant). There are links to the e-book Web site from www.seethru.co.uk, the BBC online shop at www.bbcshop.co.uk, www.freeserve.com and from www.world-productions.com.

"On The Edge is the first e-book published by the BBC, and the first by a major UK publisher," said Stuart Biles, Publishing Development Director at BBC Worldwide. "The BBC has a tradition of exploiting new media and this is our first taste of what we hope will become a much larger enterprise for us. We know that the market for e-books is likely to grow dramatically, and that we have a huge range of products, which could potentially lend themselves to this format. Starting with a novel about a group of young aspiring e-professionals seemed too good an opportunity to miss."

Harry Fox, CEO of Versaware Technologies Inc, said, "Versaware is extremely pleased to be a leading technology and e-publishing partner with the BBC for On the Edge. The ability to market and offer consumers a book in multiple e-book formats, from the Internet, is the first step in what the future holds for e-publishing and media companies like BBC Worldwide. The cross media opportunities are endless."
