Telecom unions to strike work on June 28

Seven telecom employees unions on Wednesday called a nationwide strike on June 28 to protest against the move to corporatise the Department of Telecommunications, or DoT.

The unions which have banded together under the banner of Joint Action Committee of Associations and Unions of Indian Telecom Sector, or JACAUITS, also demanded an immediate revision of the Union government's plans for further divestment in Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, or MTNL, in Delhi and Bombay.

Dilip Das, convenor of the front, told a press conference that all the 3,50,000 telecom employees would participate in the one-day strike, the first since 1995. Das said though the subscribers could use telephone services as usual on June 28, fault repair and other telecom services would not operate.

Das said the government's policy to bring telecom services in all the four metros under a corporation like MTNL by August next year would jeopardise the future of all employees under DoT and also raise manifold subscriber charges.
