Intel to acquire Indian computer networking firm

Computer chip maker Intel Corp said on Wednesday that its Indian subsidiary will acquire the consulting group of Bangalore-based software firm Network Solutions Private Ltd.

"The acquisition will improve our ability with computer networks and add to our existing strengths with clients and servers," Rick J Echevarria, director, solution centres and services at Intel, said by telephone from Bangalore.

Echevarria said he expected the deal to be completed in the first quarter of 2001.

Intel did not disclose the financial details of the deal but a company official said Network Solutions' consulting division had 120 employees.

After the acquisition, the Network Solutions consulting team will become part of Intel's Solutions Enabling Group which focuses on promoting the use of Intel servers, networking and communication technologies.

Founded in 1993, privately-held Network Solutions provides consulting services, value-added software products, and delivers complete solutions for voice and data networks, an Intel statement added.

Its customers include Citibank Corp and Satyam Infoway Ltd, one of India's largest Internet service providers.

Intel already runs a development centre in the southern city of Bangalore which is home to dozens of global and Indian technology firms.

Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communication products.
