12 Countries That Smoke The Most

According to the WHO, consuming tobacco claims over 8 million lives each year, despite a decline in global smoking rates in recent decades.

Nauru

Nauru, in Micronesia, north-east of Australia (population ~11,000) has the highest smoking rate globally at 42.1 per cent according to World Population Review 2025 figures. Its government has no legislation in place to curb it.

Rate Among Men: 42.7 per cent

Rate Among Women: 41.4 per cent

Myanmar

A whopping 42.3 per cent of Myanmar folks smoke, nearly half. And largely men.

Serbia

Cigarette smoke is everywhere in Serbia, with very few smoke-free zones and a cigarette is in many a hand. Smoking prevalence is over 39 per cent.

Bulgaria

Another East European country, of 6.5 million population, where smoking rates are high. Despite anti-smoking laws, Bulgaria has 38 per cent smokers, mainly due to social acceptance and easy access.

Indonesia

It's a male-dominated smoking club in Indonesia. The number of women smokers, among the 38.7 per cent who smoke, is negligible. Clove-flavoured kreteks (cousin of the bidis) are popular.

Kiribati

Why are remote islanders such smokers? The tiny island nation in Oceania, on the equator, in the central Pacific, has a smoking rate of 37.5 per cent. It's a place where on can smoke on the International Date Line and say you had a ciggie yesterday.

Rate Among Women: 24.7 per cent

Andorra

A higher proportion of the 36.4 per cent who smoke in mountainous, postage stamp-sized (468 sq km) Andorra, surprisingly, are women. Not enough awareness campaigns against tobacco exist.

Papua New Guinea

With a population 9 million, 37.5 per cent of folks in this Oceania nation smoke. That means PNG has 3.3 million smokers. A lot of cigarettes!

Croatia 

Smoking is pretty in, in Croatia -- a medium of bonding. Cigarettes are cheap. 37.4 per cent people smoke.

Smoking begins early in Timor-Leste that shares a border with high-smoking nation Indonesia. Tobacco is not expensive too which is why 37.2 of Timorese smoke.

The Middle Eastern country has 35.5 per cent smokers. Smoking -- particularly among men -- is highly prevalent and socially accepted.

Smoking is significant public health concern in these islands in Oceania -- 35.5 per cent of a population of about 700,000 puff, mostly men.
