5 Simple Yoga Exercises To Prevent Eye Strain

Eye yoga is a great way to overcome the strain resulting from too much screen time.

Practising eye yoga daily will help you in a variety of ways -- from improving your vision to increasing your focus and spiritual understanding.

Bhramari Pranayama

  • Sit straight in a comfortable, relaxed posture.
  • Raise your elbows on either side and seal your ears with your index fingers.
  • Inhale and exhale deeply while humming loudly as if emulating a bee.

Blinking and cupping

  • Rub your palms together to warm them.
  • Cup your eyes by placing the base of your palms over them for 10 seconds, then move your hands downwards.
  • Then blink 10 times each as you look up, down, left, right and forward.

Eye movements

  • Keeping your spine straight. Look up towards the ceiling and blink. Look at your nose, blink.
  • Look to your left, blink. Look to your right, blink.
  • Roll your eyes clockwise, blink. Roll your eyes anti-clockwise, blink.
  • Cup your eyes gently with warmed hands and relax.

Eye and hand movements

  • Extend both arms out in front of you with your hands in the thumbs-up position.
  • Look at your right thumb as you move your arm to the right and then bring it back to the centre.
  • Repeat with your left arm.

Trataka

  • Sit up straight in a comfortable, relaxed posture.
  • Place an object, preferably a candle, two feet away from you.
  • Focus your gaze on it without blinking for as long as possible until your eyes begin to water, then look away.
