Gaining ground

Dedicated gaming websites, from gaming portals to free community forums catering specifically to Indian gamers are also on the rise. These websites have seen a considerable rise in traffic ever since the big names made their official entry into the Indian market.

"Our free-to-all forums let existing console owners share their experiences, as well as help potential buyers with deciding on the best platform for them. We have dedicated sections for all three gaming giants (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii). Our community helps gamers find other like-minded gamers for online sessions," says Kailash Karkera, a senior staff member at 360Indians / PS3Indians, one of the rapidly-growing community forums dedicated to console gaming.

"We also arrange online tournaments and regularly give out freebies like Xbox LIVE access codes and free games," adds Kailash. "In just over half a year's time, we have generated a member base of around 700, with majority of them coming from the major metros. But we also have members from smaller cities, as well as a few Indians living abroad."

Though Console and PC gamers are at loggerheads over their preferred platform's superiority, the truth remains that console gaming is fast gaining ground in India, a gaming market that has been dominated by the PC so far.

And with the console giants, led by Microsoft, jumping into the fray, India's gaming enthusiasts only stand to gain in the future.
