Having missed the train on my way to Darjeeling, I did not want to take a chance this time. I went to the station to buy a ticket beforehand. As I walked down to the station, I saw the Dhirdham temple, built on the lines of the famous Pashupatinath temple in Nepal.
As I settled into my seat, I was initially daunted by the prospect of the long (seven to eight hours) journey.
But time seemed to fly as the train negotiated curves and bends, allowing me to get a leisurely and detailed glimpse of Darjeeling.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (or the toy train, as it is commonly known -- it is on the narrow gauge) is a gift of the British Raj. It adds to the charm of the place.
This 19th century steam engine railway has been declared to be a World Heritage Site since 1999.
